Flag was raised by 2nd lieutnant Wilczewski and 2nd lieutnant Michel (now colonel ret) They were from 1 Warszawska Brygada Pancerna im. Bohaterów Westerplatte.
I have a copy of an award citation for the "Order of the Red Star" that was given to a Captain Nikolai Klishin for doing this exact event.
I know that this Klishin belonged to the 8th mechanized corps, second in command in political issues of 116th tank brigade. This corps was attched to the 2nd Shock Army and later to the 5th Guards Tank Army in Januar 1945.
Recently I have talked with Pan Michel and heard his recollection of events on that day. However, it left me with many questions for which I am trying to find answers.
1. What part of the Red Army was the "1 Warszawska Brygada Pancerna" attached. Is there any way of finding out who their political officer was? He would have been Russian and his name recorded somewhere.

But only looks like a list of Polish Political Officers. Would they have listed Russian "handlers" in such a book? I wouldn't think so. However, the attached photo shows gen. bryg. Jan Mierzycan, the head of the 1 Warsaw pancer brigade from December 4, 1944, obviously discussing things with a Russian officer.
BTW, Pan Michel told me that Bronislaw Wilczewski was killed during a fight with "internal Police" in 1955.
His initial response was "BULLSHIT, there were no Russians around!"
However, he was interested to get a copy of the award citation for Klishin that I have.
Another interesting fact is that Klishin received an Order of the Patriotic War, 1st Class for action around Miroslawiec (Miroz in German) so whoever he was his awards seemed to have mirrored action by this brigade.
He is known to have been off the battlefield from April 1943 to sometime in mid 1944. His military history finished in 1946 which was the time that the brigade was downsized.
Here is a copy of his award citation from the Moscow archives. Notice that the date it was written up is April 11, 1945 (two weeks after the event). This is actually quite quick for a citation to be written. Usually it happens more than a month after the event. But then again there was a lull in activity at that time.
I beg to differ. On Pan Michel's wall is a poster from the 1995 celebration that state 12.-14. 28 marca 1945...
It also states "50 ta rochnica powrotu Danziga do Polski 28 marca 1945r
28 marca 1995r"
Not sure why the guy on the Danzig website had 29th.

It could be a different flag on a different building at a different time, because in this russian document it's written that he raised a flag on some government building (дом правительствa), which Dwór Artusa (Artus Court) was not.

Stan fasady Dworu Artusa. W podejrzanie dobrej kondycji. Znam ujęcia tego samego miejsca (pewnie jak my wszyscy) z późniejszego okresu w 1945 i jest on już zniszczony.
Ot, ciekawostka do rozważań o tragicznym przedwiośniu w Danzigu.
